See Medieval Castles, Renaissance Churches, Jewish Synagogues, Holocaust Sites, Pagan Folklore. Learn about the history of religious diversity and political conflict in this region. Trip led by World History Professor Michael Strmiska of SUNY-Orange, with guide services by the Jerulita tour company of Vilnius, Lithuania.
Sites included: (in Poland): Warsaw capital city, destroyed and rebuilt after WW II, with many historic sites, monument to Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, reconstructed medieval Old Town and castle of Polish kings, new Polin Jewish history museum; Czestochowa major Catholic pilgrimage site, famous for the Black Madonna; Łódż former major industrial city with large Jewish population, remains of Jewish ghetto; largest Jewish cemetery in Poland, Kraków historic old town, Wawel castle, Rynek Glówny (Old Town Square), Polish Art Museum; Kazimierz—once the Jewish quarter, today, popular bohemian district, near to former Schindler factory, famous from film Schindler’s List; Auschwitz Nazi death camp ruins, epicenter of the Holocaust, monument to victims; (in Ukraine): Lviv former Austrian capital of Galicia region, now major cultural center for Western Ukraine; Market Square, Opera House, Saint George’s Cathedral (Uniate-Greek Catholic church), Potocki Palace, now site of Lviv Art Gallery, Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet, Old Jewish Quarter, remains of Golden Rose Synagogue, beautifully decorated Tsori Gilad Synagogue (still in use), Museum of Religious History with artifacts of all Christian and Jewish denominations across Lviv’s history; Lychakiv Cemetery with graves of important figures such as world-renowned author Ivan Franko, Pochayiv Lavra, important Ukrainian Orthodox monastery and spiritual center; castles of Lviv.
Trip Dates: July 12-24, 2019. Cost: $3100.00 (airfare, tour, buses, museums and hotels!)
This price assumes double-occupancy (sharing room with one other person). Single supplement available for $600. Cost includes daily breakfast, provided in hotels, and five dinners. Airfare and all ground transportation in Lithuania and Poland covered. Transport to JFK airport is NOT included but can be arranged upon request.
